A vintage silver ring attributed to the Oromo people of the Ethiopian highlands. This ring makes use of an Italian silver coin mounted on a tall stem. The eagle detail is well worn. A must have for any collection!
More tribal jewelry & beads in my store. Height of crown from inside of band - 10mm. Diameter of coin - 22mm.
Inside circumference - 63.5mm. Approx size US 10 1/2. Weight - 10.9 (0.38 oz). Due to relative isolation of the Ethiopian highlands much of the jewelry traditionally produced and worn there is unique and its styles have not been influenced by the Muslim traders of the countries which almost surround it. An interesting bynote, Ethiopia is the only African country that was never colonized by a European power.
The majority of these highland inhabitants have been Christian for the last 1600 years. Christian symbols like the cross were and are still worn today.
The Austrian Maria Theresa thaler has been a source of silver jewelry produced since its introduction in the late 1700's to early 1800's.
